If you are a DIY guy, do look at some of the profiles of the top Fund Managers. Not only it will help you in building your resume but also in developing a detailed career plan.

You will shortly find a Career Development Plan template on NxtSpark that you could use to set your professionals goals and create milestones.

You can also look at another thread for a career perspective on Fund / Investment Management CFA vs MBA for Fund Manager

All the best, Paul!

sir/madam, to pursue my career as a fund manager what kind of job roles can I opt for at the start of my career so that I don't deviate or be questioned in future by companies as to why have you changed your field.

Hi Paul,

You can look at starting your career in Equity Research which will give you a solid exposure to how Fund Management works. While some of the big Fund houses are very picky about selecting candidates and recruit from premier B-schools alone, you may look at some of the smaller Fund houses. You can also consider stock brokerage companies and Investment companies which make sectoral level investments.

Also, plan to have a CFA (all 3 levels) which will be a great learning to have to build a career in Fund Management.

You may want to read a NxtSpark forum thread on Career In Equity Research to get more insights.

Do let us know if you need any more info.

All the best for a great career!

how to answer the question, 'why have you chosen finance as your career'?

Hi Paul,

Focus on the skill sets required for Finance: business acumen, understanding of inter-relationship of economy & business, ability to deal with numbers, analytical skills, etc. I define business acumen as an ability to see how revenue will come from those parts of the business where investment or expenditure is being done.

Once you know the skill sets, think about examples where you have demonstrated these skills e.g. SIP, project work, assignments, co-curriculars, etc.

Also talk about the prospects of Finance as a career and the nature of a Finance job - one has to keep learning - to be abreast of what's happening in the world of business and finance.

Hope this helps. Do write in if you need any more info.
